Arnn Elementary’s LIMS class recently held its own unique class pet election. Ms. Nigeria Cunningham’s LIMS class organized a lively campaign featuring “Penny the Axolotl,” “Joy the Hamster,” “Goldy the Goldfish,” “Roachy the Madagascar Hissing Cockroach,” and “Snaily the Snail.” Each student acted as a campaign manager for their chosen pet, delivering speeches, creating promotional videos, and answering questions from student reporters in front of grade-level classrooms.
After the campaigns, all students at the school had the chance to see the class pets and vote for their favorite, using a process modeled after the U.S. election system. This included creating paper IDs for voter registration, filling out ballots, and casting their votes in a ballot box. The event provided a hands-on learning experience about the voting process, mirroring the recent U.S. presidential election.
“This activity helps students understand that their individual choices, when combined with others, can lead to a decision that serves the majority, just like in a real election,” Ms. Cunningham said.
Thanks to this engaging, hands-on learning event, students at Arnn gained a deeper understanding of the election process, and “Penny the Axolotl” received the most votes to become the classroom pet!
