Math “Knight” brings learning to life at the Commissary
Arnn Elementary parents and students from UPK through fifth grade filled the Sagamihara Housing Area Commissary to kick off the new year with a fun-filled family-focused Math “Knight” on Jan. 14, 2026.
Three years ago, the Arnn Math Committee set out to create an event that would immerse students in hands-on learning and show them how mathematics connects to everyday life. While many students believed math lived only in a textbook, they soon discovered that it was all around them, woven into their daily decisions and the tasks they completed each day!
The annual Arnn Math “Knight” provides students with meaningful, engaging math experiences. Each grade level participates in activities aligned with their learning standards, solving real-world problems using actual commissary products while exploring the aisles with their families.
This year, families also visited estimation stations, where students made educated guesses about the weight, circumference, and quantity of various items. Students handled containers and food products to support their reasoning, measured objects to test their hypotheses, and compared the results to refine their understanding.
Throughout the evening, the commissary buzzed with collaboration as parents and students discussed their strategies, evaluated the reasonableness of their estimates, and worked together to solve problems.
Arnn “Knight” families enjoyed a truly math-tastic evening, and we are already excited for next year’s event!
